Unemployment benefits are run by each state, and the rules differ. In general you must have lost the job through no fault of your own, be able to work and be actively looking. File in the state where you worked, not the state where you live.

Benefits typically last 26 weeks and replace about half of your former wage up to a state maximum. Keep a written log of every employer you contact; most states require it.
